The How and What of Our Website « Thread Started on Aug 7, 2007, 5:09am »
Error 1:
The first error that was encountered on the site when I first put it together with just html was the layout. I'll admit, html doesn't make for a very intricate layout such as the one we have today. So, I browsed around free layouts in order to modify completely. Mostly what was googled sucked, so I went to a website I used to go to daily a few years back: Kaiyosei.net. I picked one of the layouts that had the easy to modify navigation, images, and contents. The layout is now completely different from the one chosen, and better suited for the site to load on dail-up speed.
Error 2:
The Graphics...they were only tedious to fix in photoshop, the real trouble was the header, (which I'll probably mess with later, sorry, but at least I'm not messing up the comics or the links on the site, right?). I don't think I'll ever do a background, I kinda have issues with them...but who knows, I might just get bored enough one day.
Error 3:
Finding a way to post the comics in a comic like fashion that most sites have. I went on a months worth of searches just to find that java code for the comics, and at first it didn't work, and I thought, what a waste, back to the drawing board. I later fiddled with it and got it to work and was like, hot d**n! I'm a genius! If the comic gets big enough, perhaps I'll create a drop down search area, but not now, the comic is so small, and I don't think it's going to grow that much any time soon, (although I wish =TvT;=).
Error 4:
Getting the site up in firefox. This was immensely fun to toy with considering the answer was right in front of my nose! All I had to do is make sure that the file was uploaded as an .html file. That way, when someone goes in firefox, or another browser, they won't just see all the html and css on the page, they will actually see the website itself. =^^=
Error 5:
When I started to put more works on the site than just prophesied. I had volunteered for a friends comic because I liked the storyline. And I soon added a short novel, and my fanfic. Then later we got our third writer, (although he doesn't write much, he will eventually), I felt kinda bad about having the site named after just my comic, so for a while the url frequently changed from one thing to another, but, in the end, it was just shorter to have the site named after the prophesied comic. I had a better time retyping that than anything else we had used. If it changes again, it will be to have it bumped up to a professional paid domain name. Of what? I don't really know, I'll think about it when the time comes.
Error 6:
Adding the site counter. It's still kinda a glitchy area because we don't have a site counter on every page, it's the same one on every page. So, every time someone clicks on a link to a new page on the site, the counter goes up. That will be fixed soon, but not right away.
Error 7:
The favicon. I had to do a bit of digging for this one. It's that little icon next to the url; it's mainly there to make the site pretty and look professional. But the pixels were made in photoshop and processed at a website that's linked on our page.

Okay, so you may have noticed that there is a new layout. It's about the third layout the site has been through. Since it's no longer just me, I thought it might be nice to update how the site goes.
I know it looks like a lot of tables because that is the standard of what most programs use to build websites. So, since I made the layout myself from scratch, I decided to make it less complicated and not use tables. Instead to separate everything, I used divisions. For the buttons, I used a javascript code. Lastly, the graphics were done in Photoshop. The new favicon was made through the web utilities links on the website.
I kept some of the css from the old layout, but I did change it around quite a bit. The layout is friendly to both internet explorer and firefox browsers. The only difference is that when viewing the site in internet explorer the scrollbar has color.
What's new about this layout? Well, there's less links so it's not so confusing on the first glance. I placed everyone's works under their names so that it's easier to navigate. All the other links that aren't directly linked with the website are in the links area. That means all the other comics and helpful sites for website building are in the links area. Hope you enjoy it and let us know what you think!
Some Errors that I'll need to tend to later:
Error 1: The buttons, there's nothing wrong with them really, but it takes a while for them to load. So I will use javascript to pre-load the images.
Error 2: Most of you probably wouldn't notice, but the sound from troublesome shadows is missing. I accidentally took out the music code I had placed in there. Oh well, I'll fix that with time as well. No biggie.

Error 1 is now fixed! The images preload before the site loads the buttons. Although it was quite the task, and I didn't use javascript like I said I would, (I used css), but it's done and working! Sorry for anyone trying to access the site while I was fiddling with the code because the buttons did temporarily disappear; sorry...=^^;= But not all the pages have the new script. So that is the next task at hand. It won't take long and most of you probably won't notice the changes as they occur. These repairs will not put the site out of order so you can still use the site while it's being edited! As for Error 2, it is pending validation on whether or not it should be fixed.
That's all for now!
Edit: It took about 20 minutes to edit all pages. So all pages now have the preload script in them.

We now have the website listed under a more noticeable web url. "www.ciworks.co.cc". The old url still works, you can just find the website easier with this url. If you google ciworks it's about the 7th result down on the first page! Yay for us! So enjoy the shortcuts:
